It strikes me as strange that voting was not compulsory. If voting was optional, then a] husbands might have discouraged their wives from voting and b] the true voting preference for one party or another across the nation would never be known.
Apparently women are attaching their "I voted" stickers to Susan B. Anthony's headstone. Seems appropriate.
