Dressing a Fashionable Georgian Lady, 1770 (Silly Historical Video)




Over and over we've shown you caricatures (like the lady and her ambitious hairdresser, right) of the outrageous fashions of the late 18th c. – an era that really sets the standard for over-the-top style.  This video by our favorite folks at Horrible Histories doesn't really stray too far from what was actually being worn in London around 1770. We do admit, however, to being mystified by the carrot earrings. Has anyone else every come across those in their reading, or are dangling root vegetables just a HH whimsy?

    Think about a modern Hollywood actress getting ready for a red carpet, with a trip to the tanning booth (as deadly as the lead makeup), veneers on her teeth, hair extensions, false eyelashes, fake boobs, Spanx, yeah, not much different!

    What the heck is this? I think the judges on Project Runway would have taste and styling issues with this look.

    How did anyone actually meet and fall in love? No wonder arranged marriages were all the rage :)

    The pages in the Horrible Histories - Gorgeous Georgians about fashion and make-up inspired a scene in my WIP -- I can't find the actual book just at present (buried somewhere in the stacks of research books piled around my room) but I don't remember the carrot earrings, and I haven't encountered them anywhere else. I think it was just a bit of fun for the video.
