Also why is the cartoon distasteful? I think it is excellent and would pass muster and approval today. While Cole was considered a blast by his friends, he seems like kind of a self-centered jerk to me - the majority of his "pranks" involved humiliating or taking advantage of people like those Navy officers or policemen who were simply trying to do their jobs. It was very much a classist kind of humor, too, as well as being arrogantly xenophobic - not terribly attractive today...Isabella Bradford/Susan Holloway Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00997375216314200469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5022318990784415929.post-4686542682425459152013-04-02T22:04:35.429-04:002013-04-02T22:04:35.429-04:00I'm pleased to learn this incident was just a ...I'm pleased to learn this incident was just a prank. Something similar happens in Theodora and the Staff of Osiris by R.L. LeFevers. The fictional incident was obviously based on this real life prank. Of course the Navy hated being the target of his joke... victims always hate it. But much more than that... his pranks were quite malicious.

Thanks for the link
Hels
http://melbourneblogger.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/horace-de-vere-cole-fake-sultan-of.htmlHelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5022318990784415929.post-27652102412085356112013-04-02T00:08:46.471-04:002013-04-02T00:08:46.471-04:00I love your blog so much I’ve nominated you for th...I love your blog so much I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger award: http://brokecostumer.blogspot.com/2013/04/very-inspiring-blogger-award.htmlCindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00046376371520061349noreply@blogger.com
