Looks Like Summer in Colonial Williamsburg!

Monday, April 26, 2010
Susan reports:

I left a grey, wet, chilly Philadelphia, yet three hundred miles to the south, summer seems to have arrived in Colonial Williamsburg, with the temperature today in the low 80s. The gardens look like summer, too, with roses already mixing with the last of the tulips. Even the local cats were enjoying the sunshine today. More historical goodies to come – including the latest gowns from the 18th c. mantuamaker....

Ugh, next time take me! Although I had a lovely weekend in Boston even though it was supposed to rain.

I found your Nerdy History Girls blog not too long ago and am enjoying it immensely.

Just to let you know, summer also has already arrived in another colonial site even further south: Tryon Palace in New Bern. New Bern is the colonial capital of North Carolina, and Tryon Palace was the home of the 18th century royal governor William Tryon. The Palace has acres of gorgeous gardens and there are a number of other beautiful historic houses on site. This summer we're opening an exciting new waterfront museum, The North Carolina History Center. And our town is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, so there are lots of activities. Check us out --we're history lovers too!

All the best,

Maria L.

Lovely! And just what I need after two days of gray skies and downpours. I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. I love all the new growth and blooms, but hate having to go through day after day of rain to get to them.

So I'm with Heather! Next time, take me too! :o)

I live in Williamsburg as a student at William and Mary, and it certainly is quite beautiful here this time of year! If you get the hankering for local seafood, come to Berret's Restaurant and Taphouse Grill in Merchant Square where I work!

I was tickled to see that, although Colonial Williamsburg is so carefully authentic in *almost* every way, the cat's tags are quite thoroughly modern and (I am sure) up to date! :D

I used to live in Newport News and loved visiting Williamsburg as often as I could. I especially loved driving on the Williamsburg Pkwy in the fall. GORGEOUS!!

Oh I wish I were there with you too! Am looking forward to more drool-worthy beautiful gowns.

So by Tuesday night, the clouds had rolled in, and this morning my father has turned on the heat. So not quite a full-blown Williamsburg summer yet (and anyone who has survived that deadly mix of heat and humidity understands), but the sun on the flowers is still lovely. And I'll gladly send it off to everyone were it's still grey and gloomy.

Maria, many thanks for the links to Tryon Palace - another good place for NHGs.

Tess, I love Berret's. In fact every time that Loretta and I were in town together we always have dinner there. Hmmm...I wonder if we've met one another already? And good luck on your finals!

Sue, I noticed that about the cat's tags, too. I doubt that he belongs to CW - I suspect he's just a roving tourist like everyone else. But he certainly did look at home there, and probably turned up in dozens of visitor photos yesterday!

Just found your blog! What a joy to read through, and just what I needed today. I have been to Colonial Williamsburg at least 6 times and loved every visit. Last summer I attended a teacher institute there and learned so much more - and can't wait to return! Just another nerdy history girl!
